Actually the first Gremmies *DID* have the same fuel neck issue as the Pinto (breaks off easily, stabs into fuel tank causing rupture and sparks). Unlike Ford, AMC did not deny it and recalled all the car fast and fixed them. Ford took the ‘deny everything’ route and suffered greatly for it in public opinion while AMC’s version was promptly forgotten. This is detailed in one of Nader’s books.
Judging by the photos of the MB Gremlin, it appears they are firing through the car…maybe a movie myth?

That feeds into the old crap I hear from time to time that 'Gremlins will expolode on impact, I remember them blowing up in the 70s'. I tell people when they tell me that that they need to clean their US bong since the 70s as memory is shot. Use a pipe not bong, less waste. And it was not the Gremlin blowing up it was Pintos. Most are 'uh, yea!' but a few still dont' get it. To further pound down a point in their memory loss brain, I tell them that if they have electricity in their trailer, and have internet, go look fro first teast case of Ford Pinto exploding. It was Hiway 44, Agnes street near where I gre up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Ford was held liable for it. Three girls died when their Pinto hit from behind by a drunk.
I was in high school and a friend of mine had a supoed up blue Pinto. Ran over my foot one day, didn't hurt though. Later the Pinto would be joined by the small Mustangs:
There was a rash of Pintos blowing up in Corpus Christi, and I think about a total of somethign like 7-9 people died in seperate incidents.
Bottom line is I tell people to go do homework and they will quickly find out it was not Gremlin, but Ford blowing up. Ironically later it would be Ford Excursions and other SUV's rolling over with tires blowing up, Ford Explosions! Cops die! Still happens!

anyhows, I like Mythbusters, but I think they sould have picked on a real fireball, the Pinto. Maybe fill it with Diet Coke and then drop in boxes of Mentos in the sunroof! Eddie
