RE: [BaadAssGremlins] A/C and Nationals



I don't know about the pro's and con's of sealers. All I know is my A/C
didn't work in my orange Hornet when I bought it. My friend put some
sealer/dye in it and some R-12 and after 2 years it still works fine.

1 more thing to look for, especially if the system has been empty for a while, is the accumulator/dryer. If the system’s been empty for a prolonged period, even because of a minor leak, moisture will have contaminated the system. A good vacuum (20 minutes minimum) combined with the new accumulator/dryer, some dye (so you can spot minor leaks with a black light) and a refill and you should be good to go, provided the compressor is OK. Like Ed said, check the bearing out 1st.

 

Whatever you do, DO NOT PUT ANY KIND OF SEALER in your A/C system. It’s the worst invention since Disco! Trust me, I’ve taught many automotive A/C classes and I’ve seen the very negative results these sealers can do. I don’t care what story of whose buddy did what: A/C system sealers are junk, period. The turn to mud and sometimes as hard as a rock.

Terry
Your AC compressor has an electric clutch on it. If
you turn the pulley now, it should turn freely because
it is not engaged. If you energize the clutch, by
adding 12volts of power to the wire coming from the
clutch, and you can turn over the compressor, you can
feel it pump like an air compressor. If the pump
turns over, and the system has been sealed, than you
should be ok to go. If the AC does go out, just turn
it off and the clutch will turn freely. However,
there is a bearing in the clutch that can go bad, if
you put the belt on it, you’ll hear it if it is bad.
Also, I would advice having the system vacuum down
before adding any freon to the system.
