[BaadAssGremlins] Re: the "X" (was Fwd: Emailing: Hornet 1)

On the little "X" for glovebox doors on Gremlin and Hornet this was a little
decal AMC shoved in the far right of the slot. This was done easily by the
bean counters at AMC to make 'one item' morph into many items. In other
words, take one stamping and use it for a variety of applications, they were
the kings of that.

Want another example? Playing Mantis in a conversation with them in the 90s
when the 1:64th AMX was being developed, wanted a number of photos from me,
which they got. So armed with that one initial die to make the little
SS/AMXs....then they could make dozens of others including solid colored
cars, different paint schemes ect.

I have included here two photos, both of my 71 SC/360 glovebox door which is
off the car as I do the interior. Yes, the "SC360" is ALSO a decal, metallic
one just like the Gremlin, Hornet, X, and everything else AMC stuck with
glue in the slot...later even used for 77 AMX. AMC part number of the
cover/bezel is 3616376.

What I want you to notice isseveral things. One is this original 71 SC/360
cover started it's life out as 'chrome' see the behind shot. Many parts on
AMCs started their lives out as different colors then matched by paint.
Another example would have been that 71 Matador with 14,000 miles I just
had, the interior was green, but you pull off some of the unmolested
interior parts that had never been moved since Kenosha installed them and
they were black, or tan!

So here is three photos, the back of the original SC/360 cover, a NOS "X"
dropped in if this was a X Gremlin or Hornet and the SC/360 insert also. I
may add that the "X" and "SC/360" inserts are embossed, that is you can run
your finger over them and they are raised.

PS: NO!!! AMC continued to use "old style" American Motors logos on their
shit well after 1970. Some people believe it stopped in 1970 with new
design. Wrong, AMC old style logo continued into the late 1970s, as they
emptied parts bins and used parts, note the "old style" American Motors
Corporation logo stamped on back of the SC/360 glovebox door.

And yes.......that is FACTORY BLUE OVERSPRAY on the back of the glovebox
door.
