Scrap they pay $100-$150 a ton here in Houston, but
it flucuates wildly sometimes; a lot of this is going into Olympic stadium in
Beijing and of course if you wish to google it, Three Gorges Dam also.
There are files on my site fromt he 1990s under
"just stuff" that deals with the destruction of old cars including "rambler
mentality" and "altered amcs" both worth readin whether you agree with them or
not....as I write have seen over 10,000 American Motors built vehicles crushed
in Houston alone.
And also as I write....went to a nearby salvage
yard/storage police impound lot this morning to see about a SX/4, or Spirit or
Eagle, the wrecker driver told me 'it was a two door four wheel thing like those
you have there' when he stopped the other day. So I stopped over but they would
nto let me out back to go see what it is/was, so I'll call them Monday. And in a
few minutes I will be driving down near Galveston to possibly but a 69
Ambassador SST from a lady, cheap, that the apartments wants to tow off, and she
is fixing to be deployed to Iraq. She told me 'the junkyard told me they would
give me $200 for it' and she said it needs brakes and has some rust, however
might be great parts car, who knows, I'll let everyone know later if this
is AMC #312 I have owned.....a majority of them "sympathy buys" like two
mentioned above just to keep them around for another
generation.

Concord AMX
Eddie, there are several reasons why a wrecking yard will crush cars. The
main reason is like all of us here....ROOM!! I personally own 5 different
vehicles. I keep 3 where I live and 2 elsewhere. I dont have room for all my
projects. 2nd. They make room for more "modern" cars. They get more money from
a newer car then an older 70's car. It may not sound right, but I have heard
many wrecking yards tell me just that. Plus the newer cars and parts sell
faster then the older ones. 3rd. Is the old green back. Most of the time
when a wrecking yard is sold to someone else the new owners do go through and
get rid of the hulks that are nothing but rust or theres nothing left. Its
like the wrecking yard I "used" to do buisness with. I was there hauling out
crushed cars, and I seen 5 different chevy l.u.v trucks get smashed into a
bundle and get put on MY TRUCK!! I have straight up "HORROR STORIES" about
what my old boss used to do and still does to this day. I believe that the
bottom dollar is what it is all about. Eddie Stakes posted a letter here
awhile back about how the Chineese are hording steel, scrap, what ever. And we
Americans are feeding that monster. Its just like we did before WW 2.. We were
feeding Japan all of our scrap before the war, trying to over come the
depression. Theres a story or rumor about the bomb that sunk the Arizona at
Pearl Habor....that bomb used to be a 1924 Chevy bumper. Bottom line is money
and no brains. Make more out of parting a vehicle then scrapping the thing,
but you cant tell greedy people that. Yes it does upset me, its one of the
reasons I dont and I wont work for a scrapper or salvager any more. I
dont care if they paid me a buck a mile for every mile driven..... I
CALL IT THE BIG MIDDLE FINGER!! Bill Id.

I thought that sounded way off but I didnt know the price of scrap. I
told my father that it was strange when a junkyard wouldnt sell you
parts. Most of those cars were fairly complete and not much rust. I had hoped
to make a profit but...I bought a couple of cars from the old owners and if
they made a profit, they would sell in a second. The new owners put off a
bad vibe. They are D&D Enterprises if anybody cares...eddie
If a junkyard could make a profit selling a whole car, Why do they
scrap it. Do they have a minimum tonnage requirement to get the crusher
over? I am having a hard time understanding the philosophy. I sure made it
known that I had the money and the desire to get at least all the 2 door
cars.

Thanks. It is complete with spoilers, flares, louvers. It has a
levis interior. I thought they were only made till 76. I have checked
Eddie's site already and the Google search but come up empty.I think
they are a cool car. This is a 304 Auto. But like I said, alot of rust
and a steep price.
There was a junkyard here in Tazewell Tn that had 11 Concords and
late model Gremlins sitting in his yard.I tried to buy them 2 months ago
when I found them but they were in the process of selling the business
and he wouldn't sell anything. I went to the new owner yesterday( they
just closed on the deal last week) and he had crushed EVERY AMC. 7
Concords,4 Gremlins 2 75 Matador coupes, 1 coffin nosed Matadoor 1
Ambassador and 1 Hornet. I almost cried. I had offered him $400.00 for
each car out there. He said he made more than that crushing them. He is
crushing every old car in that junkyard ( approx. 400) .If that is true,
there will be a lot of old cars disappearing out of junkyards
soon.

Check
Eddie Stakes site he has tons of info. If it is missing the
flairs and front spoiler they are impossible to find. I haven't
seen any for sale in 6 years except the 2 that Ralph found on eBay
for his son's 78 AMX. I only came across 3 sets for a 77 AMX in all
this time and bought 2 of them. One just for the front spoiler. As
far as value goes I have no idea. Beauty is in the eye of the
