RE: [BaadAssGremlins] Was 1970 Hornet.../ Now Keys

When my wife grabbed the wrong set of keys to open her trunk on her Chebby, she broke my only key for the hatch on my Sportabout. With no key I was triing to figure out how to get the old lock off to replace with one with a key. Just for shits and giggles, I tried the round Chebby key for her car in the hatch.....I no longer need to change the lock. After a close examination of the Chebby key and my broken AMC key, they were as close a match you could get!!

If there is no glove box lock you may have to bring the car to a
locksmith to have him open it. One other suggestion is to remove the
rear seat and crawl into the trunk and release the trunk lid from
inside. Having only owned hatchbacks and never a coupe or a  sedan I
have no idea how the rear seat comes out or if there is enough room to
crawl into the trunk. But it is worth a shot as locksmiths charge like
doctors and you might save yourself a few bucks. Also if you have a key
you can have the locksmith make the tumbler fit that key or make it fit
another key. I had all locks and ignition switch on my orange Hornet
keyed the same as my yellow one. One other thing if you need an ignition
switch tumbler and see them at the local auto parts store and it says
AMC on it it will fit but takes a GM key and you cant make them fit the
door locks. That's the problem I had. My orange car was bought at a
police auction and the new owner just popped in a tumbler. The car came
with 3 keys doors, trunk and ignition switch. What a pain open the door
with one key and fumble for another for the ignition switch. Rick here
was nice enough to send me an extra tumbler out of his parts car.

Sorry about the missunderstanding there Doc, I did go up last night and get the door lock tumbler out of the car. Got harrased by the local Barney Fife, he thought I was trying to steal stuff. I guess cops in small towns have nothing better to do than "haraass" people. I ended up having to call the mechanic that I got the car from and tell "barney" that it was my car. I didnt bring any of my paper work for the car, I didnt think I would need it!! GEEEZZZZ! Stoopid cop thought I was trying to steal the car or stuff in it(theres nothing in the car!) he got a real funny look on his face when I told him there was NO TIRES OR WHEELS ON THE CAR AND IT IS ON JACK STANDS! How am I going to steal a car that has no tires or wheels?? At the time I WAS QUITE P.O.ed. But now that I think about it, its quite funny!! LOL!! Going to go get a ford wheel so I can get it down today. I say down because my little town I live in is the lowest elevation point in Idaho! Doesnt matter which way ya go...ya gotta go up a hill! Still kinda bumbed out about the rim getting trashed. I do know where there is a Hornet, I maybe able to go get the tail lights off of it that I will need to replace the ones that are broke and a stock AMC wheel. THATS IF IT HASNT BEEN CRUSHED YET. Called one place yesterday that "had" one. Dont need to tell ya what happened to it. Great tip there Doc, and I do appreciate it. Bill Lewiston Id.

You didn't completely read my reply. The glove box key is the same as
the trunk lock key. If the glove box is locked remove the screws that
hold the glove box door on and the screws that holds the glove box
surround on and remove it and have the locksmith take it apart and make
a key.

Excellent tip there Doc. Thanks! I will try that instead of taking out the tumbler and using a screw driver! I will get back up there and get that door tumbler off and have a key made. The only problem now is that the glove box dont have a key for the lock. Would the key for the trunk be the same as the ignition?? Thanks!! Greatly appreciate it! Bill Lewiston Id.

Here's a trick to get keys. Remove the door lock tumbler. It is the same
as the ignition switch. Bring it to a locksmith and have him make you a
key. Next remove the glove box tumbler it is the same as the trunk key
and give it to the locksmith. Between me and my son having 6 cars
between us and 2 AMC's each I cut down on the amount of keys I carried
by one set by having the orange car keyed the same as my yellow
Hornet.Good luck with the new car.

I guess I just GOT LUCKY....AGAIN!! I should buy powerball tickets!! But I am not a gambler. I feel that I am gamling with this car that I just got. I paid a whole 75 bucks for a running car!(I hope the damn thing runs! LOL!!)  I have no keys for it,(but I do know someone who knows a locksmith) and I am in need of a couple of tail light covers and turn signal covers. I have tires for it and a battery. The grille is cracked and so is one of the headlight bezels.(gonna be doin' some gluein')  I am "raping" my Gremlin for the spark plug wires, and the front bench seat is shot to hell. We all stumble onto things or know someone who knows someone. I just happened to stumble onto this car, and I am trying to save it. Maybe not for myself, but for the nastalgic of it. Its almost as old as I am. And if the damn thing runs like I think it will I just might show up at that AMO Show. Not in my Gremlin but in the "Blue Hornet". That show is the weekend of my 41st. birthday. The shape of the body, which by the way is not excellent but damned near it, all I would have to do is sand it and paint it. My Grandmother had an AMC, ( which I own now, my Gremlin) My Mother had a Rambler and she had a 75 Hornet S.W.(which I totalled when I was 14) So AMC's have been in my family since I can remember. ( I do remember the Rambler, I was 4 or 5 and I remember the drunk who plowed into it while it was parked in front of the house)  I would like to keep it as "original as possible". As far as the AMC dealers...I still have one that is close and thats where all of my family's AMC's came from and probably this Hornet came from also. Ambasador Auto in Moscow Idaho. They now sell Jeeps and Subaru's, but I did call them when I was looking for a few parts for my Gremlin, believe it or not they still have some stuff on the shelf, or they know where to get stuff. There's my .02 on this. Eddie is right about one thing...."ANY AMC IS RARE!" and how often does a person stumble onto somthing to good to pass up? I believe anyone of us here would not of passed it up. I was, but for 75 bucks?      JUST CALL ME AN AMC FOOL! Bill Lewiston Id.

When I was looking for a second AMC all the ones I found in a 5 hour
round trip radius were junk. It seemed like all the decent ones were way
down south or on the west coast. Shipping would be way more than I would
have paid for the car. I bought my orange Hornet from a guy that lived 3
miles away but the car was originally from Florida and had only been in
N.Y. for a few years before I bought it.

Can I ask a stupid question. Why does it seem like 75 to 80% of the AMC I see
for sale are in Washington. About as for away from me as you go and still be
in the states. This might be my imagination but it sure seems that way. LOL
