[BaadAssGremlins] Re: shipping charges (was phsyteit/samggta+o)

Well yes and no here. Tape is not cheap, I buy them and about $18 for a pack. Boxes, a majority of them you can get free from shipper like FedEx, USPS and more. If it is big item, many times these are free boxes from furniture or excercise stores, but if you have to buy box from some place like Anchor box, it adds up quickly, like those gun boxes I ship these stainless spoilers in, those are $2.68 each, but a brand new box also helps with keeping it from getting damaged too. And shipping one of them is in the $8-$9 range so that is why one sees $11 ship in the US on those in my auctions or anywhere else. I agree with the taking time to pull parts, store them, and what not, one should be compensated for their time. But that shuold be part of the item price, not hidden in mysterious (or missing) shipping charges, especially on ebay.

Everyone knows (or should) know what they want for a certain item they are selling. If it is a Hot Wheels they bought for $2.99, and listed it, fee is .35 so they ask $4.99-$9.99 depending on how rare. A check on a majority of Hot Wheels, especially Redlines that are older than many people here, will reveal shipping rarely exceeds $5.50, and that includes 'delivery confirmation' all paid for by the buyer. Like that recent pink Olds 442 Redline the other day selling for $3500 in the blister pack, same shipping of $5.25 whether it sold for $1 or $1 mil.

Some stuff is long off the shelves as John mentions:

and the longer one waits to buy it, the harder it will be to find and the more expensive when...and if, it is found in 2, 5, 10 years from now.

Again however my advise has always been the same, ask questions, especially if the seller, whether on ebay, vendors list, anywhere, ask questions, especially about shipping, as if you don't no one to blame except yourself if you decide to buy something and everyone handled it from pizza guy, mail carrier, Michael Jackson, Rupaul, and others....and you get popped with fees.

Speaking of that, I shipped a functional cowl induction hood from Houston To Philly last year, the shipping was $270. To me, no big deal, as if you want one....you want one. If not, then spend a eternity looking for a ever dwindling supply of stuff everyone else wants and is willing to pay to get like these trunnions:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5641309344
(which Jeff Kennedy told me I probably have the only set of them NOS left in existence)

or flags:
   http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5641622919
(of which you will never see another set of them for sale.......period)
So it all depends, I don't want to get away from the shipping costs as opposed to what parts are worth almost 20 years after AMC was gone either, it is about people adding (or not listing) costs to their things for sale; it is a buyer beware unless the buyer askes first.

I'm not going to fault anyone for a reasonable 'handling charge'...and it doesn't
have to be going to a third party. If I sell a $5 item that will cost $1.50 to ship
via USPS, seems folks will piss and moan if the total they pat\y ventures any
higher than $6.50...yet what about ME? You think the $5 item materialized
out of thin air? It took time for me to locate, to buy and to, in some cases
stock for a lengthy time. Then there's the supplies for packing, the trip to the
post office and, of course, my time.

Some buyers expect a seller to act as a charity for their penny-pinching ways.

Let's se....$3 diecast car, sought and bought five years ago, stored safely in
unopened package and no longer available in stores....and now, YOU want one.
It bids to $5, cost $1.50 to send USPS...then there's the box, peanuts (try
buying a bag these days! THAT is a ridiculous cost!), tape...then the trip to the
PO...fuel, wear & tear on the car/truck..and again...the seller's time. But you're
gonna whine when he tells you $10 total? Yup...many will, and I say screw them.
You wanna play, you pay...again, in reasonable amounts.

Some folks buy a fender online for $50 then flip out that $40 more gets it shipped
via Greyhound...then there's the price of boxes to consider, along with the
aforementioned. But when the number tops $100 total, watch them flip out.

Another factor that should be considered- where you gonna get another one? I
recently paid $210 for a pair of fenders from Nevada. Not outrageous, right? Well,
the fenders were only $40 for the pair! But the seller had no access to Greyhound
and no interest in doing the packing. Now...is it a rip off, or do I just roll the numbers
together and say $200 for a pair of rot-free Nevada fenders....is a deal? I say deal.

The $400+ shipping example for a T-shirt is likely excessive.

OK....more than likely. ;)

Handling. That sounds like something out of Neverland Ranch. I understand this concept if you are lazy or incapacitated and CAN'T box your own shit. So you take it to UPS Store and THEY box it up for you, therefore incurring more fees to pass on to buyer. That is different. Or sometimes you have people who ain't familiar with shipping things and don't want to bother with it, and they will add those costs for 'handling' as a middleman place like mentioned above will do it. Again, the buyer pays the extra, not a bad deal if bulky items like seats, hood, fenders or sheetmetal, bad if something like tshirt, hot wheels, and anything else that you can shove in a FREE USPS Priority Mail box.
