Have you though about having them professionally compressed by a spring place? Removing them as others have mentioned can, and will, take out your whole front end, it is not designed to handle that weight, sort of like a fat chick in back seat of the Gremlin. The photo you see here is what happened when she sat in back of the car after ordering six swap meet sauages on a stick, a tub of popcorn, and a uh, Diet Coke. Seriously, see if there are any suspension specialists in your area that can do that type of work, if you were in Houston, I would probably send you to Steve at EXCEL off daffodil in the old hood, all they do is suspensions. One more thing about springs. In the 70s, my dad who recently passed away and me decided to do some front end work on a Javelin I had. We didn't have a spring compressor and decided to let big brother Tommy sit on the front and we would wrap chains around them then lock them and remove them. Tommy was no problem sitting on the hood, he was not 409 lbs and 6'7" at the time, but close. Maybe I can call Tommy to come sit on your Hornet front clip, but it might turn into a lowrider. But just as we (and dad knew better, he was master mechanuic at AMC All American Motors downtown at time) were getting ready to work on the car, the chain gave way and the spring shot past us, hitting the door on another Javelin, tearing the metal, smashing the glass and there was not only a huge dent, but a rip in the metal about 8 inches long. That could have been either one of our heads. After that day in the mid 1970s, I have always respected the sheer power springs on vehicles have.
