Ironically, what John mentions in bias below was
done thru the years even when AMC in business. There are some great books out
there by British Brooklads publications whihc includes many dozens of drive and
tests on Javelins, AMX, Rogue, Rebel and all the other hot cars way back when.
Not only in US, but Canada and Australia. Seems some were not too enthusiastic
about even sitting in a 'Rambler'. Sadly, idiots might tend to believe it is
gosple back then and AMC lose a sale. It reminds me of what you see in 2005 with
movie reviews, book reviews, and such. A movie ad in the newspaper might have
'ACADEMY AWARD!' or 'BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!' and you read closely the review
is from the Little York Trailer Park Times.
Another way to look at is is just about any
magazine you pick up with driver reports or tests will NOT put anything
derogatory in their 'report' let's say it is a Toyota ForeSkin Runner, but
they are a major advertiser, I guarantee you there will be no bad report on
their vehicle in that publication. Maybe a beer review. Heineken above 44
degrees tastes like cat urine, but they won't mention that. So unfortunately,
some will believe the 'reports' from 'critics' out there, luckily however many
people will go test drive a Hyundai and still find out it is a piece of
shit despite glowing reviews, or see a movie and realize they pissed away $10 a
ticket to see a 1 1/2 hour commercial for a toy line or line of
clothes!
Years ago in the mid 90s, there were MuscleCar
Shootouts by Muscle Car Review. Unbias as one gets. But on both covers, the
AMC was placed in the back of the photo on the cover (I still have those in bag
as I used to subscribe and also contribute to MCR) and guess what? All that
'glitter iron' in front: Camaro, Mustang, Coronet, SuperBee, 442, GTO, Firebird,
all of them lost....first time to the AMX, second time a whole new mess of
muscle cars, lost to the Javelin. Granted, the AMX and Javelin were not
the fastest out there, as one hemi Barracuda was turning 11's stock.
Still, MCR wondered if 'sticking the AMC in
the back' made them fight harder. And funny they said that as even in 200(6) AMC
fans still are out there fighting the good fight, years after the company is
long gone.
