First of all.......welcome to the group. It's always good to see the younger generation into Gremlins.

 

If you had to work the latch to get it to move, there may be a chance that the seat hinge is seized too. Try spraying a good penetrating lube on the hinge and let it set a while. Don't get in a hurry. If you do, you could break the wood the hinge is fastened to.
