Doc, We regularly use one at the auto parts store I work at. We keep ours plugged in to maintain a charge. They last about a week without plugging them in as long as you don't use them. They also help if you have to remove the battery and don't want to lose any electronics memory. There are some vehicles that require you to maintain some sort of computer memory with the battery removed so you don't burn it up. They come with adapters to plug into either a lighter, power outlet or the old fashioned way, just hook them up to the battery cables before you disconnect the battery. Ours sells for $70.00.
