Regardless of what you want to call it........it's still plastic and will eventually scratch, even if you don't use the wipers. Have you ever riden a motorcycle without a faceshield or windshield. Just driving down the road at highway speeds can be somewhat abrasive.
When it starts showing signs of wear, buff it out. Don't wait till it has too many deep scratches.
