[BaadAssGremlins] 14 Months Work On My New Hornet A Long Read

These are the repairs and modifications I have made to the orange Hornet
in the last 14 months. 4 new BFG T/A Radial tires, the car came with the
turbine style wheels in the picture. A complete exhaust system. I
installed a new heater core and heater control valve that are still
locally available. I dug into my stash of AMC parts to come up with a
heater control cable to complete the heater repair along with all new
vacuum lines for the controls. I replaced the windshield washer motor
which is the same as a Mopar and cost's 13$ new. I replaced the carb
twice as the first rebuilt one was no good and installed a manual choke.
The stock air cleaner would not work with the manual choke so I
installed a custom one. I replaced the starter twice as the first one
was also no good. I installed a rebuilt distributor and an Acell Super
Coil. The car also got a new water pump and thermostat along with a
rebuilt used radiator I had out of a 79 Concord and an after market
coolant recovery system. All new hoses, belts, wires and spark plugs,
PVC valve. A new valve cover gasket and a new battery along with freeing
up the heat riser. I designed and installed my own custom remote battery
cut off switch. The stock Motorola alternator was replaced 3 times in
the first 10 months, 2 defective ones in one month before I bought a so
called bolt in kit to install a 1 wire Delco alt.which had to be
modified to make the alternator fit. So much for a bolt in. I installed
a new oil & temp sending unit's. Changed the oil and filter in the
engine and trans. A new rear trans seal and new universal joints in the
drive shaft along with changing the oil in the rear. 2 new HD rear
springs with new stock spring shackles with urethane bushing. New gas
shocks all around along with a complete front end rebuild and the same
with the brakes including a new master cyl. and all new rubber brake
hoses front and rear and a new vacuum valve on the brake booster. I
installed a NEW 22 gallon gas tank in place of the old 17 gallon tank
and a NOS fuel tank sender. I replaced the broken remote hood latch with
a manual one. The pass side door was hard opening. I disassembled it
cleaned and reinstalled all the parts to find that one control rod was
binding against one door handle mounting bolts so I bent the rod and
ground down the bolt head a bit. The car had a GM ignition switch and an
AMC one was not available so Rick gave me an AMC one. I had all the
locks re-keyed to the same ones on my yellow Hornet. The window track
adjusting rod at the bottom of the front of the drivers door was broken.
I replaced that with a piece of threaded rod. The car did not have a
pass side factory mirror. I got a set of factory 78 Concord mirrors from
a guy in Canada. A non-remote pass side one and a remote drivers side
one. With mirrors I bought off of eBay I converted the remote drivers
side mirror to non-remote and also made a set of factory non-remote
mirrors for my other Hornet. I replaced the partially missing Hornet
bee emblem with a good used one I got from a BAG member. Another BAG
member put me onto a NOS bee emblem I won on eBay for my other Hornet. A
local AMC friend checked out and charged the A/C last spring for free
and it still blows cold. I repaired and replaced the sun visors. I
replaced all the dash knobs with billet knobs that I modified. I have
bought, been given or repaired almost all the plastic interior parts to
completely re-build the interior. I installed a set of Javelin bucket
seats I got from John Rosa and a bunch of other parts I have collected
ever before I bought the car. I also restored and installed a 73 Hornet
"X" 3 spoke steering wheel. I modified a black Jeep Horn button's Jeep
logo to AMC for the steering wheel. I also replaced the fan blower
switch. The car also has the 25 year old Aouga horn out of my fathers
new 69 Rebel SST. I also picked up 2 1977 Hornet AMX louvers and a
complete set of flairs and the front air dam thanks to my friends for
putting me onto those eBay auctions. So you see I have gotten quite a
bit accomplished in the last 14 months for an old disabled cripple.
Thanks to all my friends who have given or sold me, or put me onto parts
for my orange car or helped with advice. The list is to long to mention
everyone by name. A special thanks to Davis for putting me onto the set
of NOS fenders I needed for the yellow Hornet. So to my model building
friends this is why I really haven't built anything and to my AMC
friends you see the work I had to do to get this car to this point. If I
didn't buy it it was going to be sold to a guy to be cut up and made
into a race car with probably a brand "X" engine and ended up in the
crusher as the guy who would have bought it has a habit of starting a
project and never finishing it. I could not let such a clean bodied,
unmolested survivor be destroyed. Merry Christmas all and a Happy New
Year to all.
