Re: [AMC-list] AMC twin grip posi question interchange

replies to Mark's post follow his questions

I've got a twingrip 65 rear amc 20. I believe it is 3:15 ratio. I have not torn it down. What I hear is,

1. the early carriers are better? T or False?

ans. I don't think so, same quality high nickel cast components, the early version is two piece, later version is a single piece. As long as the bellevue washer surfaces are in good shape either should be OK. The two piece unit is way easier to rebuild......

2. something happened with bolt sizes? T or False.

ans. don't know, which bolts are you referring to

3. the early carriers are worth more? T or False?

ans. True the one piece carriers seem more valuable as are the higher ratio carriers, example the 3.54 twin grip carrier is in greater demand than the 2.72

Part B: How much if 3 is true?

ans. Don't remember what I had to pay for the 3.54 carrier but it was more than for the 2.72

Darren,
You're line of thinking makes a lot of sense regarding the same
carrier for
twin grip or open diff. However the engineers at AMC didn't see it
your way.
Unfortunately there is a carrier for twin grip and a carrier for the
conventioal open style differential.
I am still working on installing a twin grip differential carrier into
the
white Javelin's AMC 20 rear axle.
I removed a 3.15 open carrier and I'm installing a 2.72 twip grip or
as the
Jeep guys call it, trak lok, I believe.
There is without a doubt two separate carriers for each style
differential.
Also there is a carrier for twin grip ratios that are different from
other
twin grip ratios. If you desire the 2.87 gears to remain in your rear
axle,
you will need to find a twin grip carrier that will accomodate the
2.87
gears.
Now this one I'm not sure of exactly. There is a cut off point as to
which
gears fit which carrier. I believe 2.72 and 2.56 take the same
carrier, as
does I believe 2.87 and 3.15 ratios, not exactly sure on that, and the
3.73's and up take another carrier. Please some one correct me if I'm
wrong...
Good luck with it Darrern,
Armand
