Shimming the pressure valve to drop thew line pressure frees up a tiny bit of HP and lets you put more effort into the steering. There is also the fact the P/S gear boxes themselves have setup in them for road feel. In the 60's numb and one fingered steering was all the rage, yuck. Simply shimming the valve a slight amount and moving to a 73 era Hornet box will do wonders. I run my 4.0L and what I have is the mentioned 73 Hornet box and I use a Wrangler Pressure valve in the XJ pump. Factory was afraid owners would flip their short wheelbase Wranglers or some other reason. The Wrangler valve is somewhere in the 800 psi range, XJ small Cherokee up in the 1,000-1,100 range. The saginaw pumps used on the newer engines is very easy to alter line pressure. One of the aftermarket companies sells or did sell a kit. All you r
 eall need is another valve to steal shims from. *********************** I'm not knocking the electric idea. I just have my doubts as to how it can be done safely. So many things have the PCM working them I would be very surprised if factory electric steering assist does not. Aftermarket will probably step up with more systems as time goes by. *********************** My 04 Grand Cherokee uses the P/S system to run the fan, nice, quiet, variable speed.
