Re: [AMC-list] transmission

If it's a manual, and has not been recently gone through, I'd check all bearings for excessive wear, if worn replace them, replace all seals, replace the synchronizers, and check the shifter forks for any damage or bending and replace as needed. The preload on the bearings will have to be re-established. If you aren't familiar with these procedures, take it to a trans shop that kows how to fix Borg Warner 4 speeds.

If it's an automatic, that means it's what we refer to here as the iron warner. It's got a cast iron case. This trans is pretty tough, but also pretty clumsy. It can be rebuilt, and if the AMX is a high miler, you probably want to have it gone through by a trans shop that knows what an iron warner is, or at least a Ford FMX, the iron warner is modeled very similar to an FMX. Flushing and replacing fluid may appear to be a good thing, but it doesn't fix any worn parts and replace weak bands. Get it rebuilt.

Just my two cents, you may get by with putting the trans back in and runing the car for many years.
