Dale,
  It does sound like the starter solenoid if the starter is not receiving any power (from your post it sounds like the starter did not spin at all.  If the starter spins but doesn't engage the ring gear it would be the clutch in the starter or the ring gear is shot).  I have run a jumper cable to the starter and then touched it to the battery to t/s (I don't like to do it, but it is a way to check).  Starter solenoids are a weak link in the system and not very expensive.  I also forwarded this to the AMC List, AMC Forum and NTX AMC group so they can provide input.  Good luck.

 Hi Y'all 
Thought you might want to know the Gremlin News. 
OK so no one wants to buy the ole gal. So with my free time I'm working on it. Spent my last 10 bucks on extra oil and a seal/washer for the earl pan.  
I primed the engine with new oil and a drill motor, Took off the A/C belt, had my10 year old son Coy take out the spark plugs and he helped me jack up the back of the car and place some stands when he got home from schrewal.[sic] Charged the battery and went to see if I could spin the motor with the starter. 
No Joy. It won't engage the starter. So I crossed the terminals on the solenoid still no Joy. I'm thinking the solenoid is bad. I'm also wondering if it has a clutch pedal lock out. Gotta check the net for that answer. But the good side. The car didn't immediately burn up from a short circuit. The Headlights work and the idiots lights and buzzers came on. 
I'm encouraged, but I realize there's a lot of mysteries to these old kars.
