Make sure your fluid level is correct in the pump.   If you have done any 
maintenance on the system lately turn the wheels full right and left a few times 
with the fluid level correct.  

One website I checked also advised to try changing the fluid to quiet a pump.

Hey guys I havent posted in awhile. I have a 71 Javelin with the big expensive 
power steering pump and it is making a high pitched whining noise at take off. I 
have seen guys with the teardrop Chevy pumps and was wondering what was done to 
convert it.
