Re: [AMC-list] 68 AMX Tire Q (Marc Montoni)

Yeah, tires...
Hate the fact that my tires are also at that certain age... I have had the talk, but fear that a rubber may fail and an accident will occur! ;-O

I'm thinking its time for a line lock and a burn out photo to Car Craft. Who's with me ? :-)

Do I also want to go to 16"ers? Awe crap...it all snowballs don't it ?

I've seen old tires fail. One really good looking radial blew out on the conv sitting in the driveway! We're talking BIG hole and steel belts everywhere, made me think about what would happen if such a thing happened on the road.

I distinctly recall a recap blowing on our 68 Ambassador and how well dad wrestled it off the road.

Also remember him laying on a tar berm with the hot Georgia tar burning his back as he cut the cords to clear where a tire had blown and wrapped around the rear axle.

Yep, time for new tires indeed.

i'm interested in the answer to your tire query also.

currently i have Goodyear Eagle ST.  they look good w/the raised
white lettering and all and don't have many miles on them.

lately you see a lot of stories saying tires should be replaced every
6-7 yrs. course i said yeah right tire company propaganda!   then i
looked up how old my tires are and mmm bought in '92!  jeez don't
know how they got that old, i didn't.   so will replace them
one of these days soon.   don't even know if they make the Eagle STs
anymore.

When the weather cleared last week, I spent ten minutes looking for a stamped code on the rear axle, but I'll be danged if I can find it.  I even scraped off the grime and paint with a razon on those small bosses where I would have expected a stamping.  No joy.

I would assume it's a 3.15 or 3.54, although as I recall the 3.54 was more likely found on 343/390 cars.

I'm more concerned with fit than performance.  I don't intend to thrash it on the track (I have a Spirit to do that with, now).  In short, I just want it to look good, handle OK, and not have interference issues.

Any help?
