I already do that. (ex-trans tech) Reverse is instant, but drive/first surge a bit before it feels engaged enough to push the gas to make it go.

Having the trans in neutral while the engine warms up from it's first start will
reduce the time needed for it to engage when you put it in drive. The oil
circulates to more places in neutral than it does in park.
