Most likely answer is that the bolted in frames took a bit of time to set in right. Place the steel ones in a jug and weld rather than bolt is faster. Might not have saved but 2-3 minutes and 10 cents worth of bolts (in the late 70s/early 80s), but multiplied by 50K-100K cars a year... Now think about ALL Gremlin/Hornet/Concord/Spirit/Eagle bodies made from 70-88 and multiply a 50 cents savings on every one... THAT is how mass manufacturers think!

Typically the welds are already cracked or about to anyway. Cross fitting the doors is most likely not that big of a deal. The 60's just bolt in. I guess they went to welds why? With the bolted frames you rarely see cracking issues. Another case of fixing something that ain't broke.
