Re: [AMC-list] 83 concord gas tank/BBD carb stumbles

One thing I did note when I did my efi in tank pump was how incredibly clean the inside of the tank was/is. I assume it is due to the 10% corn juice in the fuel. Which is also supposedly the straw that breaks the camels back in those ancient rubber lines!

Now about those lines, if anyone has not changed out those lines in the last 8-10 years I suggest you get them all checked out. I did all new hoses when I did the efi with the in line pump, around 02.

During the recent in tank install I noted that every non efi rated hose on the suction side of the pump was hard as a rock. The expensive efi rated hose was like new. I switched ALL the lines on the American to efi rated hose, even the return lines. Its worth the extra $30 for peace of mind if nothing else!

I just recently had a similar leak on my 81 concord under the tank. It would leak only when the engine was running, when the Fuel pump was drawing fuel. The shop put it up on the lift and changed the numerous rubber lines going to and from the tank and sending unit, the return line to the charcoal canister and the rollover check valve which stops fuel from leaking in an over turned situation. The gas cap is vented if I recall and is not pressurized, but I changed mine anyway. A stant cap is readily available. It seems sometimes if the tank is very full on a hot day, there is some pressure released when the cap is taken off. My car always ran great but this year , when I started using it again it was running poorly, stalling stumble at idel and id have to use the gas and brake to keep the car running. Put mystery oil in the tank and after several tanks of even shell gas, it was the same. Figured hi had the dreaded BBD carb problems and would have to take off the carb. Instea
d I first put in a bottle of gumout fuel system cleaner, the gold colored stuff with a full tank of gas. No difference until 280 miles then all of a sudden, the stumble was gone. amazing, running and purring like a kitten. maybe I was just lucky, but if anyone has that issue, try a bottle of that first and drive till the tank is almost empty. Worked for my like a charm. Car had been my daily driver for the last 4 weeks while I am doing brakes on my 03 suv. Just turned 83K miles. usually the mechanic in the bottle doesn't work but this time he was in there.
Now I have to work on the door latch pins, thanks for the info. Looked up the part number, and the pic of the part but it is all metal, does not have the plastic sleeve in it so wonder if that is good or bad. I think it said it was for GM applications, not for Ford. Thanks for the info.
Hmm, then its new brakes, trans. fluid change and the usual to keep me busy.
Regards.

isn't the tank supposed to be vented through a charcoal canister? if

it's overfilled, gas can get into the line and hydrolock the vent.
