Re: [AMC-list] Fw: pacer axle interchange with gremlin

It looks like he replaced just the hub. Remember that AMC axles come in two pieces; the shaft and hub. Because the hubs are deformed to mate the serrations on the axle when the axle nut is torqued down, it was always a requirement to use a new hub and drum assembly. In any case, it would be imperative that Harold torque the axle nut to spec (250 ft-lb, but see below).

I checked the AMC service parts catalog and found that rear drums were supplied with hubs, so AMC considered the hubs to be part of the brake drum, rather than part of the axle. However, the service manual indicates that the hubs need not be removed for "minor" brake service. Of course, the replacement market considers the hubs to be part of the axle and new drums are not supplied with hubs.

There is a two part process for installing a new hub on an axle. The first part involves seating the hub on the axle shaft serrations, while the second is to torque the nut to final spec.

(1) Align the axle key with the keyway on the hub, then install the hub (and drum) over the shaft. Install two "well lubricated" thrust washers and the axle nut. Tighten the axle nut until the axle shaft protrudes 1.17" (1.30" on cars equipped with the 8-7/8" AMC20 axle) from the face of the hub. (2) Remove the nut and one thrust washer, reinstall the nut and torque to 250 ft-lb. If the cotter key hole is not aligned, tighten nut to next castellation and install cotter key.

Without this procedure, the new hub is likely to fail.
