There is a tab on the sender that goes into a notch on the tank hole. IIRC, it is dead top at 12 O'clock position. It is possible to get the sender in with it in the wrong place. Just a little extra force will bend the tab in is all it takes. 
   ALWAYS use a new SEAL. Ask for one for an 87-88 Eagle if they don't list your Concord. The lock ring and seal were $12 at Advance Auto 2 months ago. I would have used an AMC vendor but I put it off till the last minute and AA got it next day.

I replaced the tank in the 5 speed Concord wagon a few months back and didn't use the new seal so I have to replace that.  Anyway, it appears that there is a certain way to install the sending unit, as now the gauge needle shows 3/4 tank when full and it didn't before changing.

 

Anyone know IF there is a certain direction that the sending unit should go when I replace the seal?  THANKS!  SEE YOU AT AMO NATIONALS!
