Re: [AMC-list] 82 Concord speedometer cable tooth gear wanted

There's a chance that it does have a 727 or 998 in it, though slim. There was a heavy duty option that was usually the next larger trans in the line. Those were usually only ordered in fleet cars of which few survive, but it's possible. Pan shapes are different -- you can easily find a website with the pan shapes for a visual check.

A fellow on a hot rod board I frequent recently tried to get a speedo gear from the Chrysler dealer and was told they didn't make them any more. Might have been just the specific tooth count he was looking for though. This place has them:
http://www.aandatrans.com/Departments/Chrysler-727-Trans/Speedometer-Gears.aspx
They are listed under 727 trans, but I'm pretty sure the 727 and 904/998/999 use the same type speedo gears.

Seems like I recall seeing speedo driven gear/axle ratio/tire size charts (not necessarily with all three, maybe just axle ratio OR tire size and gear?) in one of the TSMs but I can't find one now.

I would go to another mechanic if he can't tell the difference between a 727 and a 904.? It's 904 if it is the stock transmission and I think you know that Eddie.? If you pull the old gear and see what color it is you can go to a Chrysler Jeep dealer and order the same color gear.? The gear will also have the? number of teeth stamped on it.? The color varies by number of teel on the gear.?
