I'm getting a bit off topic, but Ford experimented in the 90s with a transverse mounted straight six in a car. There was a big gear in the center of the crank that meshed with the transmission. Trans was either integrated with the engine or bolted to the side with part of the crankcase being one "side" of the trans, forget which. So power take-off was from the center of the engine instead of an end. More compact that way!

Could you imagine one mounted transverse? Maybe in a Humvee? ;)
