I have a 71, a 72 and I have had in the past a 75. I love the 71 for its metal grill and also was ordered with so many extras. My 72 was a base model, and it has a plastic grill, but it is my favorite to drive with the 3 on the tree standard shift. I think my only complaint with the 71 is the vacuum wipers. If it is too cold or I am coming to a stop.. no wipers... other than that, these have been my favorite cars out of all the AMC's. I am just a nut for the little grocery getters! As noted in my previous post, here's the AMC related second part...


I heard through the grapevine that 88 to 93 Mustang LX tailpipes are a very
close fit for Javelins/JavelinAMX.

Has anyone else heard, seen or even tried this?

I heard this from a very interesting character I met at the World of Wheels
event at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul during February this year.

Of note is the red MD Javelin (documented) This car took second place honors
in the 68 to 72 restored class which was full of Mustangs, Camaros, and very
spendy Mopars. Cool, huh.......

The owner's father was the guy telling me about the tail pipe thing, which I
thought was awesome, because you can purchase them in 2 inch, 2-1/2 inch and
3 inch diameters !!!!! and Stainless Steel !!!! He said it wasn't a perfcet
fit, but with a bit of fidgeting, it was possible to make it work. I have
some electric contractor buddies who have mandrel bending equipment for big
conduit, I'm thinking I might be able to tweak that a tad using one of the
mandrel units and get a great fit??
I love plans and ideas, I just hate when RM begins to sink in and I realize
if I do that, the cash has to come from somewhere.....

Sorry Joe, I just realized I didn't directly answer your question. From what
I've been able to gather, many newer aluminum engines, and some cast iron
engines too, no longer have core holes. I was asking a mechanic about
installing a block heater in the core plug hole and he said,    on that
particular GM V-6 the only core holes were behind the flex plate at the back
of the engine, where it was not possible to install a heater.  I think that
melting out foam core method has been used for quite some time actually, and
many of the core holes have been eliminated. To be very honest with you ,
I've never really looked that closely at the side of many of the modern
engines to actually verify that ! And didn't really care ! Most of the V-6s
I've seen out of cars were covered in goo and were obviously mistreated.

Why do my posts get so dang lengthy? I must need some AMC fellowship and
warm weather.

Yep. I really like that wagon. A nice looking, nice-sized car. A
Hornet Sportabout or Concord wagon might find it's way on my list
(unless a slightly bigger car does - in case I want to move up to a
bigger camper when I get a little older and a little balder).

No matter if die cast, or sand cast, you still need cooling passages inside
the block, which means the cast mold has to keep the casting material
out of those area's.  So any casting mold is not only shaped like the
outside of an engine, but also all the internal water cooling parts as 
well.  and of course, the internal parts need to be aligned with the external
shape, so what the "freeze plug" holes really are is the supports for the
internal structure of the mold (ie the water passages).

The internal bits of the cast will always be expendable,   you have to 
be able to wash them out afterwards.  Die casting, where the outside parts
are heavy steel, allows you to pump the casting material in under 
pressure, instead of letting gravity do the work, but that doesn't change
the need for a removable internal core of sand, or whatever material.

FWIW, an aluminum alloy with 12% silicon is an eutectic alloy!  
One of it's advantages is that it will transition from a liquid to a sold
almost instantaneously, which helps with manufacturing.  All those
Hyper-eutectic pistons you've been reading about, well that means 
they have more than 12% silicon.

Yep, I have Mustang tailpipes on my '69 Jav; can't verify the year, but that 
range sounds about right.  If I remember correctly, I think I needed to 
tweak the flange on the gas tank just a bit, on the driver's side, where the 
pipe slips through the frame and shock absorber and gas tank.  Or something 
like that.

Anyhoo, they fit and look good (IMHO as the owner).  See 2nd pic:

Last year I paid 60$ for a 304 with T176 and D300 out of a CJ(?). Haven't
actually tried it out yet but it seems OK. : )

FYI--I relisted on e-bay as mentioned at $1,000 obo, and today, with 1 day left I lowered it to $700.  

 

I just received an offer of $450 from a dad of a local H.S. girl in need of a car thru e-bay.  Looks like I will take it (try to get $500), unless someone wants/needs it for a bit more.   I will call them tomorrow afternoon.  I will get my house payment in w/o extra charges. 

 

Just wanted to keep you all posted and make sure my baby gets to a good home.  I sure appreciate all your support!
