Probably haven't re-torqued those axle nuts the entire 22 years you had it either! So now maybe everyone will take care of that, and you need to re-torque those on the American too!The problem with a used hub is that the axle is harder than the hub and actually "impresses" the axle splines in the hub when first installed. There is a key in the end of the axle, but it's primary job is just to align the hub so it can be put back on the same way when removed for bearings/seals. I don't know how long a used hub will last. It already has the splines, but will definitely seat on the end of the axle better than the old one! The end of the axle is rarely hurt. The best thing is to replace the whole hub and axle if used. I'd definitely try using something like bearing seating compound or the "permanent" loc-tite and a used hub as a temporary measure until you find a good axle and hub. By the way, those American hubs will work, but you know the axle is narrower. The old hub stuck on for moving the car around as long as it's not under power. Joe's liable to have a spare axle though.
If it weren't for the brake backing plate you could stick the old one back on with a spacer on the end to push it back a bit further. The impressed splines are real shallow, but there's not 1/16" of play in the back of the brake drum. Good time for weld on universal rear disc brackets... -------------- Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2010 10:23:45 -0800 From: tom jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> To: "AMC, Rambler, Nash, Jeep and family" <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-list] spun rear axle/hub Message-ID: <c81e13651003011023n374fd9dfr580f4d6a6b728c77@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Crap, I spun the axle in the hub, in my 63 Classic wagon yesterday. Pulling out of a parking spot, luckily, not on the 405 freeway. Yeah, I should have preemptively retorqued them. It spun less than a few seconds total, so I'm hoping the axle end isn't ruined. The hub will be though. I don't remember if there's a woodruff keyin there (there obviously isn't any more :-)
I doubt I can find a new replacement hub, but I can probably find a good used hub. Anyone have any idea what my chances are? Would Permatex stud locker with a good used hub help? I know that's a kludge and would pretty much prevent later re-use/repair. -- Frank SwygertPublisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC)
