So whats it like driving my 65 440 versus my regular 83 Concord 4-dr. I drove my American to my monthly meeting 45 minutes away. It was a beutiful winter day so I left early and got there an hour ahead of time. Thumbs up and waves the whole trip. I drove into town (Lebanon, Oregon for those who know the Willamette valley) and went looking for chow. I noticed a guy following me (suspecting black helicopters and mystery ops, ya know) and as I pulled into the lot he followed. He showed me a picture of his 63 440, 62 Electra, a tall "T" and other cars. We yakked and he invited me to his clubs season happenings.
At my appointment I parked and a guy standing there told me about the 64 Ambassador his father had for years. The usual talk, then I told him I had an appointment.
My appointment guy met me and asked if the sweet ride was mine. I said yeah. He then told me of the 62 Impala he just got and relayed problems with the brakes he was having. We talked shop for about 30 mins.
On the way home I saw a Hash for sale and checked it out.
So what's it like; a 2 hour trip turns into an all day trip, but I always dig it.
By the way, I finally pulled the 64 Waggys engine yesterday. I'll purty up the engine bay then drop in my hot rod 258. The cars been sitting for a year......Russ

Yes, we understand how to do it, though I never thought much about the why it's done that way. Tanks for the explanation! I suspended the "other" end of the rod from a wire, all at the same level. 

After reading what Tom found, I find I don't really recall how much I had to remove from the rods. Like Tom, I found the pistons to be within 2 grams (or less) of each other (replacements from NAPA, don't recall brand) and I didn't touch them. I removed some material from the rods, and don't think it was much, but am uncertain exactly how much. I wasn't looking for perfection, just an improvement. Once I was within a gram of the lightest one I stopped.

guys -- when you do the rods, you -do- check big-end and small-end
weights separately, right?  big end weight adds unbalance at crank
speed but small end weight, like the piston, adds unbalance at double
crank speed b/c it stops and starts twice per revolution.

the way my friend with the engine shop does it is with stands with
ball-bearing pivots for the big and small ends.  one sits on the
electronic scale and is zeroed out with the autocal; the other sits at
the same level, so the rod is held -exactly- horizontal.

And it was also Nash years. I don't think anything was made for the 196 L-head after Edmunds stopped making the heads, which would have been the late 50s. The only thing I know of available for the 196 OHV after 1960 was the Offenhauser 2x1V intake plate. There were probably still some "performance" cams available for both the L-head and OHV in the early 60s, but I doubt they were advertised much. May not have been on-the-shelf cams -- could easily have been ground on order in a few days.

I'll have to disagree with ya on this one Nick. First there are different
"grades" of hyper pistons. You are right that hyper pistons are cast pistons
and as such are susceptible to the same limitations that stock cast are,
mostly RPM, HOWEVER they ARE better in several regards. First (and most
important IMHO) is the resistance to skirt galling. There are quite a few OE
Manuf that use Hyper pistons as an upgrade for their turbo motors so
(properly designed and used) they WILL stand up to heavy duty usage. 

I used to do a lot of circle track 2.6 Mitsubishi motors. These things have
a long stroke and are pretty hard on piston skirts, when I would disassemble
them for a "freshen up" the skirts looked pretty bad. One thing I noticed
was the Turbo version of these engines used a Hyper piston and the skirts
had VERY little wear. I couldn't use the turbo version in the circle track
motors because of the deep dish.

I found a manufacturer (now long gone unfortunately) who was making a Hyper
version of the piston which only had a very small dish which allowed use of
the early small chamber head without jacking the compression way up. I could
cut the top of the piston flat removing the dish and lightening the piston
as well. This proved to be the answer and we never had any piston "scuffing"
problems again.

It also makes the ring lands harder which helps prolong ring life. 

Adding Hyper alloy to a piston normally doesn't add a lot to the price.
Nowhere NEAR what forged one's cost.

Then you have the KB line. These are heat treated which does add to their
strength but also adds to the cost. I have used KB pistons with good success
in Toyota and Chebbys as long as they are operated within their limits. I
have even used them in race motors turning 6800 and not had any problems.

As long as you're turning LESS than 6,000 RPM (and most street AMC motors
especially with a hydraulic cam will not see more than 5800) you're BETTER
off with a hyper piston in a NON-POWER ADDED (nitrous or blown) engine!!

The reason for the "big fuss" is COST!!!!

A Hyper piston should come in at about HALF of what your forged pistons are
and would be a great alternate for motors built for the street.

Right now there is NO in between choice from cast stock to forged. That's a
BIG jump for most street engines. If Hypers could come in at $350 that would
save enough to cover the cost of a cam kit. 

 

As to WHY Silvolite refuses to offer them (even after TELLING me they might)
I don't know. That fellow TOLD me they would NOT have to make a new mold
(that was their excuse last year) and that "it doesn't look like it would
take much to make them" face to face. How can you possibly gauge sales on an
item you aren't making or even promoting??

I wish to hell I could come up with a piston company that would LISTEN to
their customers' requests instead of DICTATING to them. Far cry from the old
days when a rep would visit your shop every couple of months just to see how
things were going and to get feedback, and when you could CALL them and
actually get to TALK to an engineer.

The biggest problem with the Pacer when it came out was fuel economy. It was perceived as a "smaller car" but weighed nearly as much as a full size Matador sedan (only 450 pounds less). There were plans to replace the Matador with a four door version of the Pacer, but that never materialized due to slow sales. Had the first fuel crisis not hit about the time the Pacer came out it would have enjoyed more success, but that crunch sent people running for more economical cars. The Pacer got no better economy than the full size Matadors, and had less power. The large glass areas increased weight, as did many safety features. The Pacer was probably one of the safest cars of the time even though it had a lot of glass. The styling was definitely ahead of the times, too far ahead for many. AMC sold 45,000 Pacers in the first 3-4 months it was available. If they could have built more, they would have sold more -- that's as fast as they could be built! Of course
 six months later the bot
 tom fell out of the demand. It's ironic that the Hornet sold so much better, but only weighed a couple hundred pounds less. I suppose less frontal area helped, though the Pacer is more aerodynamic (early models without the big grille anyway).

Oh, good point. I can see how that would happen fairly frequently. And not
that cranks are perfectly balanced at the factory to begin with.

Is it true, as I suspect, that the 195.6 OHV version has never, ever, had
one single aftermarket performance part, ever? Ever? I mean specific for
that engine, not just 'it fits'.

Even the flathead had that Edmund's head, even if it was from the Nash days.

Really not one?? A 1960's JC Whitney catalog might have something.

It doesn't look good for the hypereutectic pistons for 360s, unless we get
more inquiries. I sent an email out to Glen. Below is his response.

Hi Armand,
We don't have any plans for a 360 AMC piston. I have a stock replacement in
the Silvolite OE aftermarket brand. It has a large dish at 3.600 diameter
with a depth of .190 which equates to a 32.5cc displacement. The bore size
and wrist pin size is the deferring factors along with the high costs of
mold development. I would have to have a lot of interest in this
application, what I mean is a market to sell it so I can justify producing
it.

Okay, so I decided to park the Corolla and just drive the Rambler
while sorting it out. I wandered over to the small grocery store
yesterday to pick up stuff for the night. A guy in a Dodge conversion
van slowed down, honked and waved while I was waiting to turn. Cool.
Today I did the first half of my Saturday shop. Major fresh produce,
paper supplies and dairy from Costco. Was wandering home and a family
pulled up along side and stopped beside me. The wife/mom rolled down
her window and asked what year the Rambler was and liked it. Cool. She
said she'd be afraid of getting it hit - and I said me too. I SHOULD
have said they are fun to drive and you can pick up a sedan pretty
inexpensively. Oh well, I'll work on the holler back.

Now off to Publix for incidentals and the accountant for tax fun. Put
put put put .....? Think I'll leave the Corolla parked.

??????????? Thats great! But they were built to drive! I drive my low mileage Pacers even though I want to keep the mileage down! But they do better than just sitting being run!
