[AMC-list] Pie In The Sky

So I have an ad running on my local Craigslist, looking for AMC memorabilia.  This guy who owns a tow truck and occassionally comes across stashes of parts writes me and wants to sell me a bunch of NORS, still-in-the-box AMC & Rambler taillight lenses, shocks, carb kits, and whatnot.  All of them are either parts for less-popular models (lower demand) or common things you can still get brand new at NAPA or RockAuto.  Plus, they are aftermarket replacements, not factory parts.

He wants $10 to $20 for each taillight, $20 for each shock, and so on.  I tell him I'm not going to give him ten bucks for a taillight lens that I'll sit on for three years waiting for someone on ebay to buy it for $2.35 plus tax.  He's got hundreds of items.  I tell him if he'll put every part in a pile, I'll come over and make him an offer but not for ten bucks for any piece.

He swears I can make money on every part at the prices he's asking.

The above happened in 2007.  Fast forward to this year.  He contacts me again.  He still wants me to buy them at his prices.

Here's the rub: He hasn't sold any, himself.

Grrr!!

I'm willing to dump a small bit of cash into a few parts that other Rambler guys might want.  But I'm not going to dump a large pile of cash on them if I'm going to spend countless hours inventorying, photographing, setting up ebay sales, relisting them constantly, and then ultimately selling them for less than I paid for them.  My name would be Daimler-Chrysler if I were going to do that.

Just come up off the things, man!  I'll pay you a dime or two on the dollar -- enough to buy your lunch at Chez Louie's if that's what it takes -- for the entire batch.  You'll have lunch, I'll have a decent profit margin for my time & trouble delivering them to the hobby, and we'll all be happy.
