That's it! Make me go back out into the rain I just came home in! (I have to measure the AX-15 4x4 trans VS the T-5 I have anyways)
4x4 T-5 trans is 21 3/4" from Bell lip to tcase flange.
4x4 AX-15 trans is (unmeasured as I don't have an external slave bellhousing for it yet)

My 1980 Spirit had a wooden support and chipboard cover for the mini-spare stored flat in the cargo area of the hatchback.
 
I suspect all hatchback Spirits had this cover so that would have continued until when?  1983?
