Re: [AMC-list] Check out this guy's...

The AW4 is sort of an in between full electronic and hydraulic control transmission. There are several valves in it that can stick other than the solenoids. It will work with no electric power at all, just move the shifter through the selections. You just won't have second gear. The lowest gear selection is 1-2 (can't hold it in first), and with no power to the trans it won't cycle the solenoids to shift to first. Move it up to D and with no power it shifts to 3rd, OD to 4th. Won't hurt to pull the valve body and give it a good cleaning. I don't think any balls or springs will come out when the valve body is dropped like some older full hydraulic trannys. It's been a while since I dropped one, but I don't remember that being a problem.

The valve body is solenoids controlling liquid direction (like the hand controls on a forklift, only computerized). A stuck valve is usually due to lack of fluid change and filter cleaning or the controller is corroded/going bad at the connector.
