I would use one of the online search engines and get a phone number and then call the guy or one of his survivors and talk to them about the car. 

Also, just google that name and see what comes up, especially anything related to racing.

Yes you could start shaving layers of paint.  Then try to contact any sponsors listed or any owners or drivers.  If you find "win" stickers, research the name of the track or dragstip and see what pops up.  You might also try to contact car clubs that are associated with that area of the country.  Search the car carefully for scraps of paper indicating where it might have been serviced or raced.  

If you're planning to visit the area, you might check with a local newspaper or library to see if there are old microfilmed editions from the era in which the car might have been raced.  Then look for published track records, racing news etc.
