You guys have mades some good points on safety and I can understand Bruce's need to protect his son's rather fragile spine. That's a father's perogative and I respect that. But I feel that if you start "updating" an old car too much you change the character of the car. If you're really concerned about safety, drive a modern car. Otherwise, just put your old car out there on the road and drive defensively. There is no "risk free" activity in life. Disk brakes probably make sense for a daily driver (or a Tom J. mod to drum brakes). Shoulder belts maybe. I have a low mileage 66 Rambler that I'd really like to drive back to Kenosha for the next big meet (whenever that is) and I won't be changing the steering column, or putting guard beams in the doors or changing the seats. I might stay on the blue highways though and really try to see the country as I travel. And without shoulder harnesses in use, think how many nice highway patrolmen and patrolwomen you'll get to meet.
