[AMC-list] best automatic behind healthy 304?

Gary,

The one way I explained where you just add an adapter to the back of the crank without machining it requires a spacer between the trans and engine.  This will move the trans back slightly bringing the ring gear back in alignment with the starter.  If you don't add the spacer, you will have issues with engagement.

If you want to bring an engine down or ship one to me, I can build it with the intention of putting a TF behind it for you.  We did it both ways for a customer of mine who has a 70 Machine and wanted to put the BW back behind it at first but was anticipating switching to a TF later.  We machined the crank out and then built two adapters bushings.  One to convert it back down to a BW size and the other to replace the BW adapter to change to a TF.  Making the change now for this guy was just a matter of removing the trans, pulling the BW bushing out of the back of the crank and popping in the TF bushing.  Pretty simple.

This discussion has me wondering about how to set up my CJ8.  As I probably
will not find a suitable Rebel for my 343, I am leaning towards putting the
343 in the Scrambler rather than sitting on the engine stand.
With it's high H.P. a suitable drive train now should be considered.  As
this a collector, never was Reg or driven, I need enough power to pull my
22ft deck boat, did double frame it, but worrried about stock tranny and
rear end.  As with many, money is an issue, not that I am broke, but want to
spend it wisely.  All tub componets are like new, I do not feel that drive
train alterations will effect value,  show one's are bringing good money,
and the objective is for show and go, no offraod, to darn old for that.
Recommendations????maybe should hook up with Nick, as he is close, me in
Duluth Minn, him in that state that says "we want Brett Back"
