but you can't close the gap to top gear from the one below -and- keep
top-gear rpm the same unless you regear the axle as well as change o/d.

and with a 3.77 axle, just about any t5 1st would be unusably low.  on
the wide-ratio trannies, 2nd is only a little taller than the t-96
1st!

so there you have it - keep eyes peeled for a 3.31 axle bargain...

ps. afaik the only 2.86 was in the amc20 axle, the amc15 would be
2.73 or 3.08.  with 2.73, 0.83 5th, and 23" tires, 60=2000rpm.

pps. off your budget, but i wonder what stockton wheel would charge to
put 16x7" [say] rims on amc centers...  225/55 are about 26"!
