[AMC-list] Rust Removal - Axle Dipping Idea with Citric Acid

Hey guys,
I stumbled across a non-toxic rust remover at www.ridrust.com and they show removing rust from a Ford 9" Versaille rearend ON the car. Pretty cool stuff, it's at http://ridrust.com/axelresto.asp

I have known for a while about, and used, citric acid (food industry ... it's in soda pop) to de-rust smaller parts at home.

I recently picked up some WT axles that are going to go under my Grand Wagoneer. Both are pretty clean, just have surface rust to remove.

Since I have PLENTY of citric acid at home, I was thinking of taking a 55-gallon plastic barrel and cutting it in half, top to bottom, then gluing the two halves together to make a long "trough". Then I would seal off all the vent ports on the axles, put them into the trough and cover with HOT water and mix in the citric acid. They would need to soak for a few days.

Does anyone see any issues of doing this (submerging a complete axle)? Would the water/acid solution get in side the axles past the seals? I guess if it would, it would only de-rust the insides ... I have to pull the covers and install cover gaskets anyway.

So guys, what's your thoughts on this, please. If it works, I can de-rust 2 axles for about $20-$30 in materials. Thanks.
