It would work, but less precise than built-in crank or added to the harmonic
balancer:

1) unless you buy a NEW distributor (Mallory, etc) they're all worn and have
small timing jitter you can see on a timing light.

2) Resolving some angle (say, 1 degree) accurately is tougher when you have
a camshaft driven by a chain that wears and shifts early/late with wear and
accell/decell.

3) rotational angle is constant, but the small diameter of the distributor
compared to the harmonic balancer makes it harder to pick out 1 degree
accurately (eg a 1/16" notch for the reluctor coil is itself a degree on a
distributor; on a H.B. it's a tiny fraction of a degree.

For the cranks with the magnetic thing built in, the radius is small, but
it's VERY STABLE since it's the crank. For add-on drilling holes in the H.B.
is a cheap way to get PRECISE.
