My understanding is that the T-5 output shaft and housing is pretty much the same across the board as far as fitting. Shifter positions and speedo gear positions are different, but it's common for some of the AMC guys to use an S-10 T-5 tailshaft housing on an AMC T-5 to move the shifter location. Mustang/Ford guys have talked about the same. The only problem when doing that is the speedo gear location changes also, and the output shaft is hardened -- hard to drill for a new ball location to hold the speedo gear in place! The output shaft does not have a gear made onto it and should be interchangeable. Since the housing works in the above situations the shafts have to be the same lengths. See http://www.flatheadv8.org/ernie/ernie-t5.htmI know it's a flat-head Ford V-8 site, but they have all the T-5 info you could ask for!
According to the 1982 AMC TSM ratios are the same for four and six cylinder T-5s are the same EXCEPT for OD. Four cylinders use a 0.86:1, sixes a 0.76:1. The six has a steeper OD gear, but you might be happier with the lower four cylinder OD, especially if you keep the stock 1982 2.35 gearing. Those things always required a lot of shifting between 4th and OD in hilly country -- the lower OD gearing would help. My AW4 has 0.75:1, and later models switched to 0.79. That's with 3.55 gears. The 2.35 gearing is WAY TOO HIGH to effectively use OD. Flats and light loads. The Jeep Cherokee and my 63 wagon are not that much heavier than a Spirit. I had a Commanche with the five speed (0.79 OD) and 3.08 gears. It was sluggish and needed 3.31 gears for me to be happy with it. Fifth gear was only good with a light load and relatively flat land, speeds over 55. I suggest you either use a 3.08 rear gear at a minimum (3.31-3.73 would be better for performance!) or the shorter OD gear -- even then a 3.08 axle would be better, anything more than the 2.35 it came with!
-------- Date: Thu, 08 Oct 2009 23:29:06 -0400 From: Marc Montoni <Freedom@xxxxxxxx> Q1: So if I were to convert these to 2wd for my Spirit, what transmissions have a tailshaft and rear housing I can use -- besides a 2wd AMC T-5, I mean (because they're scarce as hen's teeth and 401's hereabouts)? Q2: Also, they are both '84 setups. One is attached to a 258, the other to a 4 cyl. Are there any major differences between the T-5 a 4 cylinder would have used vs the T-5 behind the 258? -- Frank SwygertPublisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC)
