I spent a lot of time the past three weekends fixing up a deck with
rotten supports (all new supports, concrete blocks, replaced some
decking and handrails - it's sturdy!!!). Due to playing Mr. Fixit -
and frankly, from not trusting the Rambler - I missed some cool car
shows.

So today, after patching up a few Carpenter Bee holes and redirecting
a downspout so I want have rain water washing out some supports, I
decided to take a drive. Went up a local 4 lane road (Dallas Highway),
then hung a West on 278 and went to Coot's Lake. A nice stop along the
Silver Comet Trail. A good spot for riding bikes on a local
rails-to-trails pathway.

Made it for a just under 60 mile round trip. Didn't overheat. Didn't
lose significant coolant. Did blow white, grey, black or blue smoke.
No smoke of any kind! But did go through a quart of oil - it came out
from under the valve cover and kept the intake plate nice and lubed.
So - have to take care of that. It's good to know that the car is just
fine for a 60 mile roundtrip, and should be just fine to go further.
It was nice and drove pretty well (front end could use a better
alignment). Next up - off to Rockmart or Cedartown!

When I stopped at Coot's Lake, folks came over to check it out. Lots
of Rambler stories.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.  Ha.  Sounds like old David Carradine (sp?) on the old Kung Fu series doesn't it?

Good on you.  The rocker arm cover (that's politically correct for "valve cover") leak should be easy to fix.  I think you can buy the new rubber gasket from Felpro if you need it.  

I have been doing small chores on my 65.  I put the new emergency brake cable in finally yesterday.  The wire rope on the old one was curled up in the handle because the previous owner (female I might add) didn't keep the e-brake adjusted and just forced the handle forward on to the wadded wire rope in the handle assembly when the e-brake was released.  

Now with service brakes all adjusted and an e-brake that works I'm about ready to slap some plates on it and take it around the block a few times.  I'll try to get the VIN number verified this week and finally get it registered for the road.  The city cops charge $25 to come to your house and verify a VIN number on an old car.  I hate to have them see in my back yard (more unlicensed cars are still there) but there's no choice unless i want to put the car on the trailer and haul it to DMV.    

I adjusted the valves a few days ago and found out I had them too tight.  This is my first car with solid lifters so it's an experience for me.  I bought the go-nogo feeler gauges from NAPA and that set of gauges is much easier to use than the old universal short feeler gauges I had in my tool drawer.  I read on the chevy stovebolt list that a clicking valve is a happy valve and I've got some happy valves now.

Absolutely. 
I finally have the town house living room painted, it was coral pink before! Moved the couch and love seat in and have My oldest situated enough to live for a while. Still have one small section of the one bedrooms wall to repair but the bad spot is cut out, bleached and removed all the "bad" stuff is gone. 

    So between moving him I have resumed the interior work. The rear 1/4s are sound deadened. The subs are back in and I even fired the sound up a hour ago to test. NO Rattles :). Next is pulling the heater box for Matt Haas authorized re seal and a brand spanking new heater core!  

   With any luck I will get a little road time in yet!

Martha?! The original owner named it Traveller. I'm guessing after
Robert E. Lee's horse (the original owner is an Atlanta area native).
It has to keep the name - even though my uncle's geneology book
features a picture of an ancestor in full Massachusetts Regiment
regalia. I'll keep that under my hat.

Glad your making progress on your '65. That is going to be one nice,
well done car!

I sent the canvas in for my '66 Apache Eagle. Got it repaired, new
zippers, new screens. Picked up an awning from a '65 Apache (hope it
fits, need to test it out). The Rambler is no where near ready to tow
the 400 pound Apache, but I'll get there someday!

I called to have a policeman check the serial number on my camper. He
was over in less than an hour, checked it out, ran the number, gave me
a paper and was gone. I was really impressed about how quick and
painless it was. Good luck getting the numbers checked on your car.
Sounds like it might be better to haul it to DMV, just to keep folks
out of your backyard.

The chrome ones may look nice but may actually raise the oil temperature. Shiny
chrome doesn't radiate as well as black (or off black : )).

My friend I traveled with just dropped me at home from the NAMDRA 
meet/race.....3185 miles round trip....24 hr drive to with fog in NE and 
22 1/2 hr home door to door......bought a few parts and watched the 
racing..had a great vist with old friends and made some new ones..... 
can't wait to go back................
