Re: [AMC-list] 71 Gremlin 232 Carburetor

Check ALL vacuum hoses first -- if they look remotely old just spend the $20 or so and replace them all. But even before you do that, make sure the manifold bolts are all tight. They tend to work loose with age and heat/cool cycles. If yours have never been off the bolts may be loose. It's a common occurrence! If that doesn't solve the problem I'd do a complete tune-up before the carb. New rotor, cap, plugs, and maybe even wires. Crank the engine and pop the hood on a very dark night and you can tell if you need wires! Have someone rev the engine while you watch. You might want to get a professionally rebuilt carb if you know for sure you're going to keep the car -- assuming the carb is the problem. Maybe Matt will see this -- he's had a carb professionally rebuilt and can recommend a vendor. They aren't hard to rebuild, but many times the throttle shaft holes and passages inside are worn, causing the problem. You can't fix that, but the pros will drill and bush the throttle shaft holes. The stock 1971 carb is a Carter YF list #6093S for manual trans, #6094S for auto trans. The kit is probably the same for all 1971 AMC Carter YF applications. The differences are in the metering rod and jets, which aren't included in the kits and don't usually wear out.

My car runs rough when I rev the engine and consequently shakes at highway speeds until I put it in neutral. It seems to cut out or skip irregularly. I though I'd rebuild the Carburetor, but NAPA says they have 4 versions for carter and 1 for holly. I think it's a carter, but I can't tell what number.

It is a 232 Gremlin 71. Would anyone know how I can determine what carburetor I have and if a rebuild kit is the way to go, or can I purchase a rebuilt carb?
