Re: [AMC-list] Leaking from the timing chain cover - just RTV it?

I would suggest doing as Frank suggests, except instead of running the engine, go rent a coolant system tester.  It hooks into the radiator and you pump it up to pressure (hand pump system). This will cause the coolant to squirt out where ever it's leaking at.  This is how I found the pin hole leak between the V8 timing cover & engine block, just underneath the fuel pump.

I would definitely be checking the weep hole on the water pump, that indicates what Frank is talking about.

There is a small hole just back from the front of the water pump neck. If the coolant is coming from that hole then the seal in the water pump is bad. The hole is there to leak coolant so you'll know the seal is bad, and it won't get into the bearing at the front. Also check the heater hoses and around the pump body. Wipe it dry then run it a bit and see if you can spot the leak.
