Actually, I'd think that welding a pipe to the flange would be a decent solution, as long as everything is at the right angle and not binding. That's the way most cars are made now, though all the front drivers I've seen like that have a 8" or so section of woven (braided) stainless flex pipe welded in near the flange. 

Another alternative is to use the flared end pipe and one of the big thick "donut" gaskets that others use. The donut should fit the socket on the 196 manifold just fine -- provided one can be found of the appropriate size. The 196 uses a 1-7/8" head pipe, but a 2" ID donut should fit. Seems like I may have seen one done that way, can't recall where... may just be another make or later AMC.

Unfortunately, that ball end is unique, and I don't think an ordinary
muffler shop today can make one. When I had an exhaust put on my 63
american, the shop welded pipe directly to the bolt on flange! I didn't
think to say anything beforehand and I didn't notice for a couple of months
afterwards. (I'll never use that shop again.)

The hole in the cast manifold has a deep bevel that the ball end sits in.
Some later AMC sixes have the opposite, a cone at the end, so that the
muffler shop just flares a pipe end, and the flange holds it on. A much
better system.

Not sure what a solution for the 195.6 is, but it will be custom made.

Possibly, NAPA sells ball end exhaust stubs. They sell flared stubs. Then
the shop could weld one on.
