[AMC-list] 71 AMX fuel system question

I have a 71 AMX.? In the driver side rear fender well there is a fuel canister with a float in it.? It apears to be made out of some type of composite material.? The top of it does not want to stay on.? Does anyone know what this thing does (I assume it has something to do with the smog junk).? It has a real small fuel line attatched to it (from the front of the car) and then another one out of it into the top of the fuel tank.? Does anyone know if I can get a replacement or is it okay to just plumb around (by-pass) it with fuel line?
