Yep, I am a Highway Patrol Officer, but I used to be a city Cop. As soon as the guy's emails started talking about me getting the check and following the instructions provided I got that creepy feeling. I did'nt send him the part, I never do that. I looked at the check and just laughed. Things were spelled wrong, there were not enough numbers for the routing number and the account number was about 25 digits long. And the fact that he sent $1200 just made me laugh. I just turned the whole thing over to the Sheriff's Department in my area. It won't get prosecuted but at least I did not get taken.

While fiddling with my Rambler, I decided to give it the old sniff test.
The oil seems nice and thick, but has kind of a gas smell to it. How can
I tell if the smell is because I messed up the float or needle or
whatever - and dumped too much fuel in it, versus a leaky fuel pump?

I've got my old fuel pump that didn't leak (but also didn't work
the
wipers), and my replacement pump (that I'm not sure if it's leaking, or
if I goofed the carb up, and the wipers still don't work).

Any recommendations? I know it pumps fuel - when I turn the bolt on the
crankshaft, the engine turns and the fuel pump dumps gas (I disconnected
the fuel pump from the carb and ran a line to a bucket). I just don't
know if I'm getting gas in the oil, and if so - where it might be coming
from.

Based on my limited experience (with a bad diaphragm in a fuel pump) you would
have to put a lot of gas in the oil to do any damage.  You can often smell
gasoline in oil especially if the car has been driven only for short distances. 
 

However, if the diaphragm in the fuel pump is ruptured, some of the fuel being
pumped can flow from into the crankcase instead of the fuel system downstream. 
You might not notice a difference in the fuel pressure or volume even.  I would
run the car and check the oil level frequently over the next few miles.  If the
oil level increases, you probably have a bad fuel pump.

I've got some from JCW before too. Note that only the 63-64 Ramblers had
curved glass, went back to flat glass for later models. Yeah, I'm pretty
sure it was flat in the 65-66 Classic, but could be wrong. 
I have had good luck re-lining the existing channel. Clean all the remnants of
the old lining out first. Then get some self-adhesive felt sheets from a craft
store. Cut it in ~1" strips, fold in half, pull the backing off, then work
it in with a pop-sicle stick 8.5" or 11" at a time. Trim the excess
with a sharp razor blade. Lasts a long time too -- I did mine years ago and they
are still tight. Don't try to glue felt yourself, it just soaks up the glue!
Don't know what kind of adhesive the self-stick stuff uses.

I made my own curved channel for my 63 classic more than a decade ago. I
forget dimensions, but I got it from JC Whitney (they do sell the channel,
or did, and it was good quality).

But I did NOT use mark's suggestion to insert something in the channel. Of
course as I bent it the channel would close, and I had to keep opening it. I
don't know why I didn't think to insert wood or aluminum in there.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it again but with 3/8" or whatever aluminum
tapped
in there. I used a pair of blocks and a rubber hammer and tapped and fit to
the glass until it was acceptable.

No, they are not making fun of AMC (any more than we do).  I gotta find a
way to get to this...

THREE AMCs ON THE HOME PAGE and this is not an AMC event... I can tell you
from experience, the LeMons crowd is GREAT! When we raced last year most
everyone knew what a hornet was, and thought it was great. They love cars
for their unique oddball selves... and not an impala, 55 chev, mousetang,
camaro within miles...

mail fraud.

65 and 66 Classic (as well as Ambassador and Marlin) have curved glass. 64 and
newer American also have curved glass.

Dumbest con ever.  How could anyone imagine it's on the level when
they're
claiming to do something as stunned as overpay by $1160 on a $40 part?

Yeahbut...  The cheque is a fake, and they want you to send back the 
"excess" via Western Union, so it's untraceable.  There's
nothing by
which these guys can be tracked down.
