The Ram sounds abused. I had a 96 1500 with a 318 and I had no major
problems at all (I also made sure it got all of the maintenance the
owners manual called for). The only things I wasn't happy about
durability-wise were the A/C and the water pump (both went before 70,000
miles). The starter last 120,000 miles and the fuel pump went 130,000
miles (just a couple of months before I ordered the new one).
Best mileage I got with it was 18 empty (it usually got about 12
towing). I usually got about 14 going back and forth to work. I'll admit
that there were a couple of things the drove me nuts about it but
nothing that affected it's utility. I actually drove it again a couple
of weeks ago and it's still running pretty much like it did they day I
got it.
My 2007 2500 w/Hemi is for sure a better built truck and it also gets
better gas mileage. I've only done one longish trip with it empty but it
did manage 20.5 MPG. Towing the same weight as my 96, this truck gets 15.5.
BTW, make sure the tires are properly inflated. 32 PSI isn't enough. The
spec is 42 PSI and it will make a *huge* difference in gas mileage and
ride quality.
