" Fact: Any AMC (or similar vintage) car, in it's most perfect state of tune,
" NOT RUNNING, SITTING IN A PARKING LOT emits more hydrocarbons into the air
" than a 2008 Honda does RUNNING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.

true, as far as it goes. but how much was emitted manufacturing that
honda, following the food chain back to mines and wells? how much in
the junkyard phase? one number i heard, back in the '80s, was that
making a car emitted as much pollution as the car did in its lifetime.
cars have gotten better. i don't know about factories.

and don't forget emissions-controls retrofits. i can drop '90s jeep
mpi into my late-'60s american rather easily; mopar even made a kit,
though it was aimed at '80s 258s rather than earlier. an entire 4.0
in place of the 199/232, mpi and all, isn't that hard either.

" It's EASIER! to own and drive a 45 year old orphan car now! The internet,
" filled with 1,000,000 crazy cultures and religions and XXXXX porn is filled
" with car fans and old auto parts and interesting discussions. I think it's
" all great. Bring it on!

also true, as far as it goes. but up here they've still gone through
45 salty winters, and the one thing you can't get is sheetmetal.
