I'll stack my answer on Andrews.
 5speeds.com built world class trannies for Jeeps.
It took a custom main shaft to pull off and sales went 
in the crapper with the invent of the AX15 and the 3550 on the jeeps.
Use Non world class stuff from 83-85 Mtang V-8 rated at 265ftlb and shift nice or go to the 3550 from a 2000 up XJ it has 3.8-1 first IIRC and shifts smoother than the AX trans, but I'd take that with a grain of salt.
  I had the 3550 in my 01 Dakota, dropped on a Hurst crippletition plus shifter and it shifted NASTY!

Save a buck or two and put an AX15 in and Fuhgetaboutit. Till it needs synchros...

amc/jeep t4/t5 and torqueflite are 23 spline, same as mopar.  only the
ax4/ax5, ba 10/5, and a few ax15 and aw4 were 21.

apparently not.  you can put the '83-5 pre-wc mustang 5.0 stuff in
though.

1st is 4.03:1 iirc, 2.95 for the 'stang.
