I'd give him a day and try again.
He seemed a little old school to me and he seems to have a very large pile of stuff!
He will doubtlessly need a little time to identify what part you need, unless you gave him the exact part number, then He will need to see if he has it inventoried and find it! I don't think he will tell you he has it unless he checks to be sure.

Alternately, do you guys have Lowes, Home despot type stores?
A guy once told some people that he built his ebrake cables using cable for hanging pictures etc and for housings he used the hard plastic tube such as used for water line etc.
The Home improvement stores have a lots of things that could be used to build such a cable.  If you don't mind keeping an eye on it and keeping it lubed this may do the trick for you.  I'm not sure how progessional such a cable needs to be for you!
