I looked up the fan belt arrangement in the 74 TSM. It's under cooling, page 2-18. 
There's no need for a double pulley to remove the AC compressor. The balancer has a pulley made into it which drives the power steering and A/C compressor. A pulley bolts to the front of the balancer and drives the water pump and alternator. Sounds to me like that's what you have now -- I don't see how you could have the balancer spaced out. 

I checked the Pacer (Series 60) TSM for 75, 77, and 79. None show a double pulley -- only the balancer (with pulley combined) and a pulley bolted to the front of it. The only inconsistency is that some showed the pulley as larger than the balancer (74 TSM) and others showed the balancer as the larger.

If you don't have overheating problems leave what you have alone. The only possible problem could be not turning the water pump fast enough or turning it too fast, but either is remote. Before you make changes in pulley diameter, you'd have to make 100% sure everything else in the cooling system was up to snuff -- good radiator, thermostat, and radiator cap. The cap is the most often overlooked item -- the spring weakens with time and it will no longer hold the rated pressure, which leads to overheating. If a cap is more than 3-5 years old and you have an overheating issue, it's the FIRST thing I'd change! Cheap too. 

Sounds like you're just keeping the car going, it doesn't have a lot of value to you, not if you think $400 or so to fix the A/C is more than the car is worth. I'm not putting you down by saying this, there's nothing wrong with keeping an old car as a "beater". This is, however, a group of people who like AMCs and usually regard them a bit better than "beaters" or cheap transportation -- though some of us have one just for that purpose. I have my old J-10 truck, for example. I keep it mechanically fit, but the rust on the body is too much to even think about repairing or trying to make it look good. It's a beater/work truck only, and when the rust gets too bad I'll junk it and save a few parts.

  I was writing to ask if you a fan pulley that would be interchangeable with a '74 Hornet.  I have a 258 I-6 with A/C, power steering.  Basically, what I am trying to do is to bypass the A/C compressor.  It took a crap sometime ago and I have no intentions of paying more than the car is worth to have it fixed.  I have a single belt pulley with a spacer on there now.  I looked in my parts book and saw there was a two belt pulley option for the 60 series with an I-6 engine.  Please let me know if you have one or possibly know where I can get one.  I greatly appreciate your assistance.
