Yeah, I've seen where it doesn't look like the paint stuck very well. The cars were dipped in primer all the way up to the roof, so there was *some* protection, but we all know primer (especially the old-school stuff) doesn't keep moisture out. The lack of a sealing coat of paint is one reason the cowls will rust out. I suggest you get in there with a spray can (you can actually get in better than with a gun!) or even a brush and get some paint in the floor of the cowl at least. I used a brush and some oil based enamel to reach back in the far areas, just used a semi-gloss black. The places that show I left alone and just sprayed them as best I could without getting runs. The black painted areas don't show at all. Even if you lay your head on the cowl and really look it just looks like shadows. you might be able to tell (see brush strokes) if you shine a bright light back in there, but I don't think you can even do that due to the screen under the vents.  e cowl vent bottom black no one will ever know without a bright light and looking for it. Brush on bed lining wouldn't be out of the question for that area.

You can do it the way AMC did and not worry about prepping it. I've seen 
the paint in that area come off in sheets on several cars. Whatever you 
do, you're going to be limited since there isn't good access to most of it.
